What to Do Before You Store: A Packing Checklist
Think You're Ready to Store? Here's What Most People Forget.

Renting a storage unit is the easy part. Getting your stuff ready to go in — that takes a little planning. Whether you're in the middle of a move, clearing out a garage, or just reclaiming some space at home, a little prep goes a long way toward keeping your belongings safe and your unit organized.
Here's what we recommend before you load up that first box.
Sort Before You Store
The worst thing you can do is haul everything to your unit without thinking it through first. Take time to go through what you actually want to store versus what could be donated, sold, or tossed. The less you store, the less you pay — and the easier it is to find things later. A good rule of thumb: if you haven't used it in two years and it doesn't have sentimental or seasonal value, it probably doesn't need a unit.
Clean Everything First
Dirt, moisture, and food residue can cause real problems in storage — mold, pests, and odors chief among them. Before anything goes into a box or onto a shelf, make sure it's clean and completely dry. This goes for furniture, appliances, clothing, and anything else that might absorb or trap moisture.
Use the Right Boxes and Supplies
Not all boxes are created equal. Uniform, sturdy boxes stack better and protect contents more reliably than a mismatched collection of whatever you grabbed from the grocery store. A few supplies worth investing in:
- Medium and large boxes (heavy items in small boxes, light items in large)
- Packing paper or bubble wrap for breakables
- Furniture pads or moving blankets for larger items
- Stretch wrap for drawers, shelves, and anything with doors
- Quality packing tape — don't skimp here
Label Everything Clearly
Label all four sides of every box, not just the top. When boxes are stacked, you'll thank yourself for this. Be specific — "Kitchen: pots and pans" is more useful than "Kitchen stuff" six months down the road. Color-coding by room is a bonus if you want to take it a step further.
Disassemble What You Can
Bed frames, shelving units, and large furniture pieces take up far less space when broken down. Keep all hardware (screws, bolts, brackets) in labeled zip-lock bags taped directly to the piece they belong to. Future you will appreciate not having a mystery bag of hardware.
Think About How You'll Load the Unit
Before your first trip, have a rough plan for how the unit will be organized. Heavier, sturdier items go on the bottom. Fragile items on top. Things you may need to access more frequently should go near the front. Leave a small aisle down the middle if you can — it makes a big difference when you need to get to something in the back.
